       Assessment

GOAL:

To objectively assess the strengths of the of the Medical Staff Functions with emphasis on the internal peer review within a system.  The goal is to identify opportunities and approaches to strengthen the myriad of functions effectiveness.

WHEN NEEDED:

QMCG Medical Staff Function System Evaluation is appropriate to reduce potential negligent credentialing and malpractice claim risks by developing a standardized process and to improve the effectiveness of the performance improvement process and strengthen credentialing and reappointment decisions, and to hone other required functions such as Executive Committees and leadership.

DESCRIPTION:

QMCG will assess each component of the medical staff system and identify strengths, opportunities and possible approaches for improvement:

  • Medical Staff procedures for: Staff membership and credentialing, granting of new privileges, privilege eligibility standards, concurrent screening of patient care, focused peer review, corrective action, fair hearing and appeals processes

  • Program structure including agreed upon values, practitioner-performance profiling system, department performance standards, screening indicator and performance standard update mechanisms, and MEC and governing body review of performance data

  • Peer review training including orientation of new practitioners, QI and peer review updates to current medical staff, and leadership as well as committee member training

  • Committee structure and formal communications between Medical Staff functions, administration and the Board

  • Use of outcomes of the peer review process including screening data, follow up actions, committee minutes, hearings and appeals documentation, and credentialing reposits

  • The process of clinical service reviews including review of service quality, assessment of criteria and QI systems as well as medical record review

  • Sentinel events management and any failure of the Medical Staff peer review program in sentinel event resolution.

DURATION:

A QMCG Peer Review System Evaluation can be accomplished in 4 to 6 months.
