Areas of Practice
Healthcare law and consulting emphasizing issues pertaining to patient care;
medical staff; peer review; credentialing; quality assessment/improvement; risk
management; healthcare facility accreditation, licensure and certification;
practitioner licensing and disciplinary matters; healthcare system design for
medical staff structure and integration; development of governing documents and
policies related to medical staffs; physician recruitment.
Representative Experience
- Health planning and policy development while Assistant Professor, Medical
College of Virginia School of Dentistry; participant in faculty practice
clinic;
- Clinical Dental Hygienist, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota; treated
medically complex and compromised oral pathology cases and provided
inservice training to oral surgery and oral pathology residents in areas of
patient management and education;
- Consultant to Indian Health Service and HEW Region III to assess, redesign
and oversee implementation of dental health programs;
- Counsel to Director of Health working with all regulatory divisions in
areas of regulatory drafting, interpretation, implementation and enforcement
in such areas as facility certification and licensure surveys and
investigations; infectious disease control; certificate of need; and
maternal and child care;
- Accreditation survey preparation and advisor during survey process for
numerous clients;
- Policy, procedure and program design and implementation in areas of
credentialing, peer review, quality assessment and risk management systems;
- Design and implement mergers of medical staffs as result of mergers and
acquisitions involving healthcare institutions;
- Assist medical staffs and medical staff leaders with developing systems
for quality and efficient health care delivery for integrated delivery
systems and managed care.
- Ongoing regulatory compliance work with federal and state agencies
including Ohio Department of Health; Department of Health and Human Services
at state and federal level; Occupational Health and Safety Administration
and agencies enforcing OSHA; Drug Enforcement Agency; state professional
licensing boards;
- Partner in Health Care Department of the law firm of Bricker and Eckler
which serves as counsel to health care entities throughout the country as
well as many healthcare trade associations. The firm represents a wide
variety of health care entities including hospitals and their medical
staffs, the long term care industry, home health agencies,
provider-sponsored health insurance programs, health maintenance
organizations, preferred provider organizations, physician hospital
organizations, as well as individual healthcare professionals and group
practices.
